One of the most significant benefits of using a carbon mountain bike fork is the decrease in weight that it brings to the table. The weight of a carbon mountain bike fork is only a third of the weight of a steel mountain bike fork. A carbon fork is only half of the weight of an aluminum fork. This decrease in the weight of the fork has a tremendously positive impact on the performance of the bike.

For anyone that uses their mountain bike for a lot of hard rides, it is quite likely that they will have to replace the fork on their mountain bike from time to time. If it is necessary to replace the fork on a mountain bike, it is important to replace the fork with a fork that is exactly the same size as the old fork. A difference of even a few centimeters can have a significantly negative impact on the performance of the bike. Due to their strength, low weight and tremendous performance, carbon forks should be the replacement forks of choice.

There are different types of carbon forks from which to choose, at corresponding differences in price range. The best kind of carbon mountain bike fork is one that is made from 100% carbon. This is the most expensive type of fork on the market, but it is also the lightest, strongest and best-performing. It is quite difficult to damage a fork made from 100% carbon, and this completely justifies the added expense of purchasing one.

There are also forks that combine carbon and aluminum components together. An aluminum/carbon fork will have carbon blades to better absorb the impact on landings, but the forks are attached to an aluminum steerer tube and crown. If on a budget, the aluminum/carbon fork can offer a much more durable alterative to a steel or aluminum bike fork. However, since it is not made from a single carbon mould like a 100% carbon fork, it will obviously be more susceptible to damage.

For those mountain bike riders that are very hard on their bikes, it is a great idea to utilize a carbon mountain bike fork. They will resist damage much better, but there is one note of caution to sound. Although they are more resistant to damage, it is much more difficult to determine if a carbon fork has been damaged than a steel or aluminum fork. A carbon fork will show no outward signs of damage, even if it is weakened. That means that if they have been damaged in a previous crash, then they can suddenly snap during a jump on a subsequent ride. Obviously, this is a very dangerous situation. That is why most bike experts recommend that a carbon fork be replaced after any kind of significant crash in which it is involved.

Carbon mountain bike forks are becoming an ever increasing commodity both on aftermarket bikes and production bicycles. Part of the reason is that they average around half of the weight of a bonded aluminum fork and one third of the weight of a steel fork. This difference in weight could have a significant impact on the performance of a mountain bike.

Mountain bike forks may have to be replaced at one time or another. It is important to note that when you need to replace a fork it should be the same length as the fork that is being replaced. There are different kinds of carbon mountain bike forks to be aware of. 100 percent carbon forks may be a bit more expensive, but they have greater resistance to being damaged than other types of forks and are around 40 percent lighter. This type of mountain bike fork is normally constructed in a single, uninterrupted moulding. A carbon fork blade and steerer tube that is bonded to an aluminum crown is known as a carbon/aluminum/carbon fork. A carbon/aluminum fork has carbon fork blades that are bonded to an aluminum steerer tube and crown. This is the cheapest type of carbon mountain bike fork you will find.

One of the best selling carbon mountain bike forks is the Ritchey WCS Carbon Cyclo-X Fork. The 2010 Cyclo-X model mountain bike fork has a 1 and 1/8 aluminum threadless steerer and carbon legs. It is also very light in weight, weighing only 685 grams. This Ritchey mountain bike fork has carbon blades, while the crown, steerer, dropouts, and brake bosses are made of alloy.

About Marzocchi

Marzocchi was founded by brothers Stefano and Guglielmo Marzocchi in 1949.  They initially manufactured motorcycle forks but have also been manufacturing mountain bike forks for over twenty years.

Lightweight and short travel (usually around 80-100mm), XC forks are typically single crown due to the mild terrain and to save weight so not to make the bike too heavy to rise.

Historically, XC forks will have been spring loaded however the trend is now moving towards air sprung suspension.

The obvious benefits of such a change of keeping the weight of the fork to a minimum and making them easy to adjust this.
